Installing Capital Gainz
------------------------
To install Capital Gainz, insert the diskette and type:
C:> A:INSTALL
This starts up an Install Loader, which decompresses and executes the
full installation program. You will be prompted for:
o The Drive:Directory to install from. This is usually A:\ or B:\.
o The Drive:Directory to install to. This is usually C:\CAPGNZ.
The full Capital Gainz Installation Program started by INSTALL is
CGINSTAL.EXE. If you are a novice computer user, you should simply
accept all the defaults displayed. The fields are:
o The Drive and Directory to install from. These are set to the
From Drive:Directory values entered in INSTALL.EXE.
o The Drive to install to. This is set to the To Drive value
entered in INSTALL.EXE.
o The Program Directory, where Capital Gainz will be run from. This
is set to the To Directory entered in INSTALL.EXE, and is usually
\CAPGNZ.
o The Data Directory, where Capital Gainz data files will reside.
We strongly recommend using the default, which is the Program
Directory, unless you absolutely need to keep data in a separate
directory.
o The Document Directory, where Capital Gainz online documentation
files reside. We recommend using the default, which is the DOC
subdirectory under the Program Directory, and thus usually
\CAPGNZ\DOC.
o The Download Directory, where Capital Gainz download related
files reside. We recommend using the default, which is the DNLD
subdirectory under the Program Directory, and thus usually
\CAPGNZ\DNLD.
o Whether to Install Capital Gainz, which encompasses the Capital
Gainz Program and related files.
o Whether to Install the Documentation, which refers to the online
manual used for program help. If you don't need online help, and
have a printed copy of the manual, you can save disk space by not
installing the documentation files. These files can be removed
later with the CGREMDOC.BAT file.
o Whether to Install the Example Data, which refers to a set of
data provided for you to try out Capital Gainz. This data can
only be installed if you haven't already used Capital Gainz to
record data. To remove it when you're done, use the CGREMEX.BAT
file.
o Whether to Install the Graphics Program, which encompasses the
Capital Gainz Graphics Program and related files. Only check this
if you purchased the Graphics Program.
o Whether to Install the Download Program, which encompasses the
Capital Gainz Download Program and related files. Only check this
if you purchased the Download Program.
o Your Registration Number.
o Your Name.
o Where you want Temporary Files created during normal program
operation. This can be the same as the Program Directory, an
existing \TMP or \TEMP directory, or a RAM drive. You can boost
program performance by using a RAM drive, which should be at
least 1MB.
o Whether to Modify CONFIG.SYS. This simply checks if the FILES
setting in CONFIG.SYS is high enough, and modifies it if
necessary.
o The Current Installed Version. If you are upgrading from a
previous version of Capital Gainz, be sure this value is correct.
When you complete the form, the Capital Gainz Installation Program:
o Decompresses the requested items from the distribution disk(s).
o Verifies that the files were installed.
o Initiates a data file upgrade, if necessary. See below for more
information on upgrades.
When installation is complete, simply type:
C:> CG
to start up Capital Gainz.
Installation Problems
---------------------
Common installation problems include bad diskettes and corrupt
archives, resulting in installation errors indicating invalid archive
or disk read errors. If you run into this, contact your original
source for a replacement. If you encounter problems getting a
replacement, contact us directly and let us know where you obtained
your copy.
Upgrading Data Files
--------------------
Whenever you install a new version of Capital Gainz over data created
with an earlier version, a data file upgrade is needed to convert the
data to the new format. You are strongly urged to backup your data
files (*.DAT *.K01) prior to upgrading, since a failure during the
upgrade process could leave them in an unusable state.
Since the upgrade process is automatically started at the end of
installation, it's best if you install new releases to the directory
containing existing data. The displayed Upgrade Form prompts you for:
o The directory containing data files to be upgraded.
o The version number of Capital Gainz used to create the data being
upgraded.
The upgrade process converts from version to version, up to the
current version. Thus, if you are using Version 3.0 and upgrade to
Version 4.0, the data is upgraded from 3.0 to 3.1, from 3.1 to 3.2,
and from 3.2 to 4.0.
If you want or need to upgrade AFTER INSTALLATION, invoke the Capital
Gainz Installation Program:
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
C:> CGINSTAL
Choose Upgrade from the Main Menu to bring up the Upgrade Form.
Upgrade Problems
----------------
If you experience problems upgrading your data files, first try
reinstalling again after restoring the data files from your backup. If
the upgrade still fails, we can perform the upgrade for you. Simply
copy you old data files to a diskette:
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
C:> COPY *.DAT A:
C:> COPY *.K01 A:
and send the diskette to us. Include a note with information on what
version you are upgrading from, and what problems you encountered.
We'll send back the upgraded data for you to copy back into the
Capital Gainz directory:
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
C:> COPY A:\*.* .
Upgrading from Pre-3.0 Version
------------------------------
Version 3.0 of Capital Gainz added support for multiple portfolios. If
you've been using a single set of data files, then you don't have to
do anything special - the upgrade process will place your data in a
single default portfolio. However, if you've been maintaining multiple
sets of data files to simulate separate portfolios, the upgrade
process is more difficult. For this discussion, we'll assume you use
the \CAPGNZ directory, and have 3 separate diskettes with data files
for: Killer's portfolio, Iggy's portfolio, and Stinky's portfolio.
o Be sure you have current backups for all sets of data files.
o Copy Killer's data files into the Capital Gainz directory, and
install the new version over it, upgrading those data files.
Killer's data files will become Portfolio 1.
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
[insert Killer's data diskette in drive A:]
C:> COPY A:*.* .
[insert Capital Gainz diskette in drive A:]
C:> A:INSTALL
o Create directories for Iggy's and Stinky's data files:
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
C:> MKDIR IGGY
C:> MKDIR STINKY
[insert Iggy's data diskette in drive A:]
C:> COPY A:*.* IGGY
[insert Stinky's data diskette in drive A:]
C:> COPY A:*.* STINKY
o Next, we'll upgrade Iggy's and Stinky's data files:
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
C:> CGINSTALL
Choose the Upgrade menu item, and for the Directory field, enter
C:\CAPGNZ\IGGY. Verify that the Upgrade From Version value is set
to the Capital Gainz version used to create this data. Complete
the form to upgrade IGGY's data.
Upgrade Stinky's data in the same manner, specifying
C:\CAPGNZ\STINKY for the Directory field. Then, exit from
CGINSTALL.
o Start up Capital Gainz:
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
C:> CG
Choose Portfolio from the Files pulldown menu. Select Change
Portfolio from the Portfolio pulldown menu (or use the Change
button), and change the name of the portfolio displayed to
'Killer's Portfolio'.
o Choose System Configuration from the Config pulldown menu. Set
the Data Directory field to C:\CAPGNZ\IGGY. When you complete the
form, Capital Gainz will restart, this time using the data files
in C:\CAPGNZ\IGGY.
Select Change Portfolio from the Portfolio pulldown menu (or use
the Change button), and change the name of the portfolio
displayed to 'Iggy's Portfolio'.
Then, select Copy Portfolio from the Portfolio pulldown menu. The
From Directory should be C:\CAPGNZ\IGGY, and the From Portfolio
should be '001 Iggy's Portfolio'. Set the To Directory to
C:\CAPGNZ, and the To Portfolio to '002 Iggy's Portfolio'.
Complete the form to copy Iggy's portfolio to the \CAPGNZ
directory.
Repeat the above process for Stinky's data files. When you use
System Configuration, set the Data Directory to C:\CAPGNZ\STINKY.
When you use Change Portfolio, set the portfolio name to
'Stinky's Portfolio'. When you use Copy Portfolio, set the To
Portfolio to '003 Stinky's Portfolio'.
o Finally, go back to the System Configuration item on the Config
pulldown menu, and set the Data Directory to C:\CAPGNZ.
o If you haven't already done so, follow along with the
demo/tutorial to get acquainted with all the new features. Also,
you may want to get rid of the directories we created for the
upgrade:
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
C:> DEL IGGY\*.*
C:> RMDIR IGGY
C:> DEL STINKY\*.*
C:> RMDIR STINKY
Quick Start
-----------
1) Run the Demo/Tutorial:
C:> A:
A:> CGDEMO
This annotated screen show leads you through common program
usage.
2) Install Capital Gainz. When done, start Capital Gainz with
CG.BAT:
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
C:> CG
3) If you installed the Example Data, play around with it to get a
feel for the program. When you're ready to record your own data,
remove the example data:
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
C:> CGREMEX
4) A default portfolio is created for you, but does not contain any
securities. A default Broker is also created. Add securities you
own by defining Local and Global Securities.
5) Enter purchases, sales, and distributions from your mutual fund
or broker statements. The Activity History Report, which lists
recorded data in chronological order, is a valuable tool for
verifying entries against your statements.
6) The users manual is large, and should be used mainly for
reference. However, do read over Chapter 1, which contains
informative essays on key program concepts. Also, Chapter 17
provides an in-depth look at the calculations employed, and
Chapter 18 has valuable tax-related details.
